Arizona's STO & ESA Advantage
Arizona offers two powerful programs that help families afford private school tuition: School Tuition Organizations (STOs) and Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs). Many of our families fully fund their student’s education through these programs.
What is an STO?
School Tuition Organizations are nonprofit organizations that provide tuition scholarships funded by Arizona individual and corporate tax-credit donations. When approved, scholarship funds are sent directly to Phoenix Christian to cover tuition costs.
Families can fully fund their student’s tuition through STO scholarships—the more STOs you apply to, the higher the likelihood of full funding.
What is an ESA?
Empowerment Scholarship Accounts are state-funded education accounts administered by the Arizona Department of Education. Eligible families receive public education dollars that can be used for approved educational expenses, including private school tuition, fees, curriculum, and services. ESAs can substantially offset tuition costs.
- Choose Your STOs. Arizona has several School Tuition Organizations that partner with Phoenix Christian. Apply to multiple STOs to maximize your chances of full funding.
- Complete the Application. Submit applications directly through each STO’s website. Applications typically open in the spring and may be accepted year-round, depending on availability.
- Submit Required Documentation. Most STOs require financial information, proof of enrollment, and other supporting documents. Make sure your taxes are filed in a timely manner.
- Await Award Notification. If approved, the STO will notify you of your scholarship amount and any next steps.
- Funds Sent to School. Approved scholarship funds are paid directly to Phoenix Christian and applied to your account.
- Renew Annually. STO scholarships are awarded for one academic year. Reapply each year to continue receiving funding.
- Apply Online. Apply through the Arizona Department of Education’s ESA program website.
- Submit Documentation. Provide student information and supporting documents to verify eligibility.
- Receive Determination. The Arizona Department of Education will notify you of your approval status.
- Accept & Set Up Account. Formally accept the award and complete account setup before funds are released.
- Use Funds for Tuition. Submit tuition payments through the ESA system, and funds are disbursed directly to Phoenix Christian.
- Renew & Maintain Compliance. ESAs must be renewed each year. Follow program guidelines and submit required documentation.
