College Planning

Your student has unlimited options both here in Arizona, across the country, and around the world! We want to help you and your student in considering all of the many possibilities. When researching colleges, counseling recommends that students apply to multiple schools. Apply to a “dream” college, several realistic colleges, and a safe college (where you know you’ll be accepted and can afford). You might be asking yourself, “how do we decide from over 3500 colleges/universities?”

Naviance Family Connection along with your school counselor will provide invaluable information and tools for you to stay on track. Please contact Lisa Blake at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to obtain your Naviance registration information.

Step 1: Check out your options

First start with Naviance College Planning. Use the "Advanced College Search" to identify colleges that match your profile. Once Naviance suggests a list of colleges, spend some time checking them out. Use the "Compare Colleges" tool to research and compare multiple schools and begin to narrow down your options

Step 2: Road Trip!

Visit the colleges on your list. This is by far the best indicator of a “good fit.” Visit during the spring or the fall when you’ll have the opportunity to see the “real campus life.” Prior to your visit, schedule a meeting with the admissions representative and financial aid officer. Make sure you plan enough time to talk with students, professors, and if possible, stay overnight in the dorms. If you are unable to visit the college, try http://www.campustours.com for video tours.

Pre-college summer programs are a great way for high school students to test drive college life. There are hundreds of pre-college programs to choose from, each with its own history, culture and costs. Deciding what pre-college program is best for you is often the hardest part.  Check out this site to find a program for you! USummer Pre-College Programs

Step 3: Apply

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, apply to each college. Keep in mind that every college will require an application fee. Research the application deadline for each school and create a College Checklist. The Application Organizer can help you stay organized and meet your deadlines.

Complete the "About Me" survey on Naviance. This survey will provide personal, unique information that will help the staff write a stellar recommendation letter. Submit a copy of the "About Me" survey to each teacher who writes a letter of recommendation for you.  You will request letters of recommendation and transcripts through Naviance, under "Colleges I'm Applying to."

The Counseling Office is always available to answer questions Monday-Friday from 7:30 - 4:00.

You may also use the following websites to aid in your college search. As always, counseling is available for any questions or assistance. Good luck!
